Wednesday’s Wonder: Fancy Book Learnin’

This Wednesday’s Wonder: Ljubljana’s dedication to street art reminds us that the written word is as old as that old guy you know.

Without a doubt, 99% of the time you ask my students if they love to read books for the sake of reading, they will say “no.” Of course, there’s that 1% of oddity who say they love books and enjoy reading for pleasure. But, as mentioned before, they’re the oddballs. It’s great they love reading, yet time and time again, education just kind of turns reading into a chore.

It’s no wonder students only “read” (by read, I mean Sparknotes) when there’s a grade to be earned. Street art in Ljubljana reminded us of this cloying little educational phenomenon. Reading takes up time. It requires complex thought. It’s something old people probably do.

But, by golly, based on the length of the beard in this street art, reading also makes you wiser.

…The more you know…

Pick up a book. It's good for you. Pick up a book. It’s good for you.

Do you enjoy reading books? What’s your favorite?

  • I wish that more students loved to read! Even when I was a kid, I loved playing video games…but I also loved reading. And I still love to read. Hopefully many of them appreciate it when they are a bit older!

    • I’ve slowly learned to love reading more. I used to love it as a kid. Then I hated it in high school and college.
