Savannah Banana

We went to Savannah, Georgia for Valentine’s Day. And what would be Valentine’s Day if we didn’t spend it in the most romantic place in the United States? You might be thinking: Savannah? Romantic? How? Let us show you. Exhibit A:

Rocking Chairs

When we stepped out of Savannah airport, we were greeted with rocking chairs. Not bus stop benches, not a cement block vaguely resembling a bench, not a cold steel bench. Rocking chairs. My, it was pleasant waiting for the bus.

Waiting for the bus has never been so pleasant. Waiting for the bus has never been so pleasant.

Doilies, Sweet Tea and Comfort Food

It’s called comfort food for a reason: it’s comforting. And isn’t love to some degree, very comforting. Some people may say that love sometimes means embracing the unknown. But, the truth is, love is donning fat pants and shoving your face with butter, y’all, and still being adored by your significant other.

Mmmm... fat. Mmmm… chicken pot pie with the best. crust. ever.

Love Squared

Savannah has so many squares and parks. It seems as though they were at every corner. Tall old trees adorn the parks, with low-hanging branches. The squares just kind of silently call for hand-holding, as if we just magically walked into a bubble of romance. Wouldn’t you know it, we held hands.

We sat at Chippewa Square, where Forrest Gump was filmed. If that movie wasn’t lovely, I don’t know what is. It was about man who was stupid, but was the most unassumingly successful person ever, purely because he was surrounded in love.

One of the many pretty squares. Our view from the sidewalk of one of the many parks.

Forsyth Park

We had the most romantic stroll in Forsyth Park as the sun set. It’s a large green park that was full of people enjoying the Saturday afternoon. There was even a wedding.

That sun. That fountain. That park. That's Forsyth. That sun. That fountain. That park. That’s Forsyth.

Pecan, The Romance Nut

You don’t know romance until you’ve had the almighty pecan. By golly, it’s everywhere.

It's a pecan candy, y'all. It’s a pecan candy, y’all.

Squirrels Need Love, Too

Then there was this guy. We sat in a park eating some nuts (they were mostly pecans, y’all) and a little nut-loving squirrel spied on us from a nearby tree. Well, I just love little animals (especially the plague-carrying kind) and tossed a few pecans to him. Wouldn’t you know it, in no time, he was sitting on the bench with us.

Look how cute. That crazy little nut. Look how cute. That crazy little nut.

Public Intoxication is So Romantic

Nothing says romance like being able to drink your booze in public. While we walked around the older area of Savannah, I sipped on a Fat Tire (Fat Tire is the worst thing to happen to beer), saying things like: “babby, I luuuuuuuv youuuuuu.” Slurring your words is quintessential romance.

What is the most romantic city you’ve visited?

  • No need to convince us that Savannah = romance! We went there for part of our honeymoon (drove down from Charleston, SC where we spent the rest of our time) and it was absolute heaven. Great food, great squares, great history… what more could you want, really?

I love Savannah! Being a Georgia native, I’m probably a little biased. I’ll have to say the most romantic city I’ve visited so far is London or NYC. I know it’s typical, but there’s something magical about being there with someone you love. Next time my boyfriend and I are in the states, we’ll make a trip to Savannah and see the romance.

  • v. sad to have yet to visit that part of the country – sounds delightful! i agree with hannah re: nyc as romantic…it’s the best. and then there’s venice, but i was there studying abroad, so can’t really say i know for SURE that it is romantic.
