The Pigeon Whisperer

venice_03

Pigeon poo lines the concrete. Officials dressed in orange shirts hand out flyers begging people to not feed the pigeons. Yet, they’re still there by the hundreds. Pigeons cooing and whizzing within inches of people. No one seems to mind, though.

Especially not the birds.

They’re used to being fed. People even make a quick Euro by selling black market bird feed straight from their pockets. With a little bit of bird seed, pigeons will perch themselves on peoples’ arms.

This is all fascinating enough. But, what about the pigeon that’s a little too friendly. Here’s Exhibit A who happened to land on Frank’s shoulder without being bribed by food.

When the moon hits your eye, like a big pizza pie... When the moon hits your eye, like a big pizza pie…

Or what about the fact that these pigeons come in swarms, invading a very famous, old square. Sure, pigeons add an old-world charm. However, they. are. everywhere. I mean, everywhere. It’s hard to walk around without practically tripping on them. They line the ground by the hundreds. People eating on the inner-outskirsts of San Marco Square were consistently guarding their food and brushing their hands through their wind-whipped hair (in case that wasn’t the wind in their hair, if you know what I mean…).

Is that another pigeon? Is that another pigeon?

Is it something that will ever possibly go away? Do people actually like pigeons landing on them? Is San Marcos Square truly ruined because of these birds? I don’t know. But, what I do know is that a particular pigeon–who we will call Bob–did not leave Frank’s shoulder for anything. We showed Bob our empty hands, pulled our pockets inside out, pet him gently, named the guy and even played matchmaker to Penny the Pigeon!! Not once did he bail–until some kid took their black market bird feed and tossed it into the air like confetti. Then Bob took off.

That’s alright, I don’t know how I would be able to fit Bob into my carry-on.
