My Husband: The Chosen One

It was an eerily foggy morning in Koyasan, Japan, a mountainous holy city with temples and a World Heritage Site graveyard. We were among the many travelers and pilgrims traversing to this sacred area full of temples. As we walked through the graveyard, the weather got progressively colder…which was odd because it was noon. I’m not trying to hint at anything, but if you infer anything from this post, it’s that we were walking through a graveyard and it was getting colder….(hey, man, you thought ghosts, not me).

Now I'm not dropping any hints, but it's a little freakishly cold in the graveyard. No inferences here at all...Just letting you know... Now I’m not dropping any hints, but it’s a little freakishly cold in the graveyard. No inferences here at all…Just letting you know… Walking through the VERY big cemetery. Walking through the VERY big cemetery. They're all dressed up. They’re all dressed up.

Many famous people are buried in Koyasan. Among those people is the founder of Nissan. There’s also a grave that if you put your ear up to it, you can hear screams from hell. Did you know that screams from hell sound like hollow granite!? Creeeeeepy.

Among the graves is a rock inside a wooden, square-shaped structure. The rock is sanded and smooth and sits on a shelf, with only a little rectangular opening to reach it. The legend goes that the person who can lift it and place it on higher ledge WITH ONE HAND has a soul free of sin. Anyone who feels as though the rock is heavy is full of sin.

The Chosen One waits in line...like everyone else. Gotta wait your turn. The Chosen One waits in line…like everyone else. Gotta wait your turn.

We waited patiently in line for our turn to see if we’re sinful little bastards. Everyone before us struggled with lifting the rock onto the ledge. Then my husband was next. This was the exact moment the Chosen One was revealed. Like Thor to his hammer, or Lancelot to his sword, Frank picked up the rock in two seconds flat and placed it on the ledge.

Peoples’ eyes got big and jaws dropped. The crowd ooooh’d in disbelief. People stared at Frank waiting for words of wisdom from the obvious Chosen One who heart doesn’t have sin. He turned to the crowd, smiled and said: “Anyone wanna know which way the beach is?”

Everyone else in line continued to struggle; including myself who could not even turn the rock over, let alone lift it. Guess I’m a sinful sonofabitch. Whatever. I’m married to the Chosen One and he has a lot to say. Just ask the crowd.
