As if We Really Look Like This! in Ljubljana

California holds a certain reputation. It’s the Golden State with a history of Spanish missions and the gold stuff. It’s history is probably newer than the rest of the country. So, California –and I guess its inhabitants– hold a certain je ne sais quoi. Even more specifically, Los Angeles sets peoples’ imaginations abuzz. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve heard from people: “oh, so you meet movie stars?” or “you must eat a lot of kale” (kale is the new tofu, I guess) or “people from LA are so vapid.”

That might or might not be true.

But, it wasn’t until Ljubljana when we saw street art depicting, what I guess other people from around the world think Angelenos look like:

As if we really look like this! As if we really look like this!

This artwork was from the Metelkova District. As far as we know, it’s an autonomous area in Ljubljana that was once a former Yugoslav military barracks. The art is pretty interesting because it seems to cover every inch of the Metelkova district. It also comes in different forms, like this art installation:

It's a foot mouse. I think... It’s a foot mouse. I think…

Metelkova District seems to thrive on being completely unique, much like the rest of Ljubljana. But, this particular area really caught our eye because this hostel was decorated so creepily. Maybe the artist was trying to symbolically represent the souls of this former prison turned hostel? I’m not sure, but it had the added effect of scaring a little piss out of me (just a little, though).

Art? Art? A little bit creepy.

Still some of the other art work had us laughing. We still can’t make heads or tails of the half-eaten fox art. But, perhaps that was also the artist’s intention. The rooster was also pretty hilarious. Lastly, there was the painting that said normal is a bad word. It sure is. Thanks, Ljubljana. Your Metelkova District definitely makes that true.

fox butt fox butt Rooster call Rooster call Yes, yes it is...For Metelkova District. Yes, yes it is…For Metelkova District.
