Kuala Lumpur: It’s in Malaysia

KL sign How did Kuala Lumpur know we would love Kuala Lumpur?

Our trip to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore marked the third of four currently booked trips that round out our “Year of the Honeymoon.” You see, we’re getting hitched this year. Instead of blowing 20 grand solely on the one-day event known as the “wedding,” we’ll be putting that amount towards more fruitful endeavors, like traveling and buying a home. So, a majority of our wedding planning has gone into planning for hotels, plane trips and itineraries. Personally, I find this kind of planning to be much more creative and fun than wedding planning.

When the mister was planning our trip to Asia, I casually mentioned traveling to Malaysia. Two days later, he bought tickets to Kuala Lumpur. Our conversation went something like this:

“I booked tickets to Kuala Lumpur.”

“I thought I said Malaysia.”

“Yeah, Kuala Lumpur.”

“Babe…What about Malaysia.”

That’s right, I didn’t know Kuala Lumpur was in Malaysia. This statement is coming from the third-runner up in the sixth grade Geography Bee.

I also didn’t know that Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country. I found out this little tidbit when we entered the train station and everyone — EVERYONE — was covered up. In fact, I’m pretty sure I was the only person wearing shorts.

Kuala Lumpur is one of the financial hubs of Southeast Asia. One of the major attractions that stands out are the Petronas Towers, remarkably tall twin towers that dwarf every other building by comparison. Because Malaysia’s capital is a major business center, the entire city is connected by a monorail and sky bridges, making the muggy heat much more tolerable.

Kuala Lumpur is also an amazing city. It’s a place where new meets tradition and the two sync together perfectly, making it a city that represents historical Malaysia in a prosperous 21st century. Evidence of Malaysia’s previous colonial history is everywhere, including building design and the language. It was probably my favorite city on the trip. We’d go back in a heartbeat, but next time, I’ll uh…I’ll put away the shorts.
