Some Burek in Belgrade, Baybee!

Well, travel, you did it again. You gave us something delicious that we can’t find back home. Just like the Saint Eve, the burek is practically nonexistent.

You see, we were in Belgrade. We were so hungry. It was the kind of hunger induced by extreme fatigue and, among other things, a need to eat. Walking around the city led us to Buregdz̆inica Sarajevo, a bakery, not the city. Serbia’s alphabet is Cyrillic. So after turning left at the street sign with the phi and the parasail-looking upside down U, we somehow managed to stumble upon the bakery.  After some pointing, smiling and finger-gesturing, we bought four bureks.

Now, here’s the thing: burek is like a croissant stuffed with cheese. However, it’s not completely flaky like a croissant. It’s also shaped like a skinny brick. But, sometimes it can be shaped like a pie. The skinny brick burek is easier to eat, as is the case with food on a stick or food shaped like a stick. It’s flaky, bread-y and toasty warm. It can also be stuffed with meat. In fact, ours was stuffed with meat.

burek, my love. Where can we find you in the States?! burek, my love. Where can we find you in the States?!

When I say the burek was “good,” I’m being modest. It’s downright delicious. Bite after bite, we didn’t want the magic to end. Then it did. Sorrow set in briefly and then we did what two very hungry travelers have to do: we went back for more. The bakers seemed unsurprised at seeing us pop in to the bakery twice within an hour. Apparently a lot of people must do this: realize how awesome burek is and come back for more.

I’m not going to lie to you, these Wondernuts didn’t find any other burek anywhere else that measured up to the burek from Buregdz̆inica Sarajevo (the bakery, not the place). What made this burek stand out over other bureks on our trip, you ask? Perhaps it was because it had the right amount of crunchy-to-flaky texture ratio. Or conceivably, it had just the right amount of meat which led to the perfect balance of saltiness. Maybe it was because all the burek was made fresh, as in “just baked” fresh. Whatever it was, it was the best we had. And, we have yet to find it in the States. So, if you see it, drop us a line. I’ve been dreaming about this stuff.

Now, It’s Your Turn!
Buregdzinica Sarajevo is located at Svetogorska 38, Beograd. At the time, burek was 589 dinar per kilogram. It’s perfectly normal to keep going back for more.
